Health Care Evaluation Today, many Americans are affected by health care decisions made without their prior knowledge. More than likely most Americans are unsure how those decisions are decided and who is responsible for making those decisions that ultimately affect how health care is administered. Compare the ways poets have written about love, bringing out different aspects of the theme Essay There are endless ways in which love can be portrayed and occur. There are numerous types of love, whether it physical, emotional or romantic love. I intend to expand upon and highlight the various ways in which love an loss is portrayed in 5 selected poems: John Clares First Love, John Keats La Belle Dame Sans Merci, Robert Browning My Last Duchess and Christina Rossettis two poems Birthday and Remember. All of the poets portray love the concept of love or loss or both in relation to some; they all attempt to capture and express the presence of love and loss in the closest way possible. In First Love, the poet (John Clare) situates his poem as if telling a story. The story of a young boy who sees a beautiful young girl and falls in love with her the first time he sets eyes on her. The poet sets the scene and mood for his poem in the first few lines; an over whelming emotion of love which has overcome the young boy (John Clare as a child) as his eyes wander over to the beautiful young farmers daughter; whose complexion is like nothing he has seen before. I neer was struck before that hour With love so sudden and so sweet. The poet continues to complement this princess like figure whom he adores and loves compassionately; Her face it bloomed like a sweet flower And stole my heart away complete. It is made clear to the reader that the poet has fallen deeply in love with this young girl with out even getting to know her; totally dumbfound by her beauty. The young girl whom the poet falls instantaneously in love with is probably unaware of how compassionate this young boy feels towards her; thoughtlessly she waves away his physical state and walks away. Regardless of the fact that the young girl did not even acknowledging his presence the poet persists in complementing her beauty despite the fact that she did not even acknowledge his presence. Since the moment the poet-to-be set eyes on this fairy tail princess like figure; Clare is paralysed due to the over load of emotion which has overcome him and of such a level experienced for the first time, almost as if he is under a spell: My legs refused to walk away. The poet carries on to say Words from my eyes did start; as if due to the overload of emotion running through his body paralyzing him and making him dumbfound, the young boy desperately wants the girls heavenly eyes to meet with his, as if a sign to recognize him and his feelings towards her. Oblivious to the fact that the young girl still does not recognise his feelings towards here or his existence as a matter of fact; Clare carries on acknowledging his loss, and simultaneously emphasizes his undying love towards her and continuers to secretly admire her. The poet expresses his loss in such a way that the reader feels sympathetic towards him; secretly admiring and long a woman who does not even know he exists let alone his feelings towards her. Are flowers the winters choice? Is loves bed always snow? these two lines express his feelings of undying love towards his first true love and how he feels he should have told her how he felt; but alas it is to late, so he puts his feelings in writing in the form of a poem. The first line expresses his feelings of admiration and love towards her, where as the second line reflects nature to his love: the pale pureness of snow in reference to the beautiful princess life figure and the coldness reflects his feelings on how he should have acted to maker her recognise him. The second poem I have chosen to analyse; which also involves the concept of love at first sight ending in misery is John Keats La Belle Dame Sans Merci. In La Belle Dame Sans Merci the opening few lines set the scene; a cold autumns morning as a unknown pedestrian walks past lake finding a knight whom presumably spent the night beside the lake. As the pedestrian speaks to the knight, there is an eerie sense that a considerable time has passed since the knight decided to stay by the lake and when he was awaken; the poet decides to portray this by putting a lot of emphasis on the fact hat the season is drawing to an end: The sedge has withered from the lake, And no birds sing. The poet puts emphasis on the fact that the mere action of the knight was not common (sleeping rough by the lake on the opening of the autumn season) by having the pedestrian ask the same question twice in each of the first two stanza; O, what can ail thee, knight at arms. The knights only excuse is that of an affair with a woman so mysterious and yet beautiful whom he fell in love with the moment he laid eyes upon her faery like face; I met a lady in the meads, full beautiful a faerys child. The lateral translation of the poems title La Belle Dame Sans Merci can be translated as: The Beautiful Lady without Thank-you. The poet describes this Beautiful Lady as to have long hair and wild eyes. Although Keats uses emotive language to express the theme of love in his poem, the reader does not feel that the true essence of love is captured at all, although Keats comes very close, And there I shut her wild eyes With kisses four. In the nineteenth century poems about the physical love were abolished; so Keats uses a less direct approach, as he describes the knights wild night of passion, and describes there thrill as the knight; set her onhis pacing steed The character in the Keats poem has taken the essence of unrequited love to another level. In First Love only had a memory of his true love and treasures that memory; where as in La Belle Dam Sans Merci the character seemed to have also experienced physical. The two poems First Love and La Belle Dam Sans Merci differ in many of their physical attributes; first love is separated into 3 stanzas which each consist of eight lines, in contrast to of La Belle Dam Sans Merci which takes the form of a ballad. The origin of Ballads date back to the medieval times, which matches the time La Belle Dam Sans Merci was set in (knights and fairy like maidens. One of the possible reasons why Keats sets his poem in the past is to forget about Fanny Brawne; Fanny Brawne is Keats version of the girl in First Love. Like Clare, Keats was subjected to rejection and were both had shy personalities; and similarly both poets reflected something about their own past into their poem e.g. the young boy in First Love is John Clare himself. Due to the fact that John Clare was superior education wise; it gave him the advantage in producing a stronger impact and a more effective poem in rank of love theme than La Belle Dam Sans Merci: And this is why I sojourn here Alone and palely loitering Though the sedge has withered from the lake, And no birds sing As Keats takes the poem to another lever by carrying on the story which is situated within the poet; Keats travels further than Clare due to one main factor, the fact that Clare is telling a story of his experience of rejection as a child where as Keats hides his rejection behind the story of the knight. Furthermore Keats also elaborates more than Clare in the opening, setting the introduction in the form of the knights dream. Who is the real hero in Beowulf or Grendel EssayThe way the poet has structured the poem reflects the dukes personality; controlling and possessive, as he is the only one seeking throughout the duration of the poem, this emphasises the dukes view of social status, he is superior to the emissary therefore the emissary must listen to the dukes babbling on about his life. In contrast to Keats poem La Belle Dame Sans Merci both characters the knight and the pedestrian partake in their conversation; unlike the duke and the emissary. Whereas Keats ballad consists of emotive views on the romantic side of love and loss, in contrast to Brownings use of emotive language which emphasizes the aspect of love towards materialistic possessions; wealth, fine arts, etc. (the duke liked to think that he possessed his wife). The way the two poets; John Keats and Robert Browning structured their poems, a considerable difference appears. The love struck knight who would fight his way through a whole army of enemies and slay all the dragons he could find just for another glimpse of his fair maiden. Whereas the duke of Ferrara seems also unaffected when the topic of discussion turns in the direction of his late wife, the reader comes to the conclusion that the duke must have passed his period of mourning, doubting if it ever took place. The last two poems I have chose to analyse have been penned by the same poet; Christina Rossetti, A Birthday and Remember. The first of Rossettis poems I have chosen to analyse is A Birthday. In the poem A Birthday Rossetti conveys the aspect of love as an art; but not in the same way Robert Browning portrays the art of love in My Last Duchess. Moreover Rossetti portrays it as a feeling and a celebration of feeling such emotion; My heart is like a singing bird. Throughout the first half of the poem Rossetti expresses the joy of love, or the anniversary of love almost like a second birthday described in the most extravagant, natural and imaginative ways; My heart is like a rainbow shell All the ways Rossetti chose to describe love is in a fragile sense which can easily be broken like a loving heart; e.g. a shell can drop and smash into a million pieces a rainbow only comes if the conditions are perfect and goes ads quickly as it comes, an apple tree loses its beauty in the autumn and winter as it stands bare with no fruit or leaves; catching every one by surprise when it blossoms in the spring. Therefore the reader gets the idea that Rossetti has suffered loss in her life as if it was just too good to be true she lost he love as soon as she found it. Whereas in the second part of the poem the poet changes her view of love to more dramatic affecting aspects of love; the once fragile view of love transforms to that of a more lasting image possibly referring to the first true loss of love being the most devastating and damaging. Raise me a dais of silk and down; hang it with vair and purple dyes; Carve it in doves and pomegranates, And peacocks with a hundred eyes; The poet Rossetti chooses to use the aspect of nature as a reference toward love; this may be because of Rossettis first two heart aches due to love; she moved to the country to devote more time towards the things she feels passionate about and enjoys: poetry and the fine art of painting. In Rossettis poem A Birthday she used many of the themes, ethics and words which can be associated with a Pre-Raphaelite group which took form as the industrial revolution was at its peak. The Pre-Raphaelites were painters or writers belonging to or influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a society founded in England in 1848 to advance the style and spirit of Italian painting before Raphael. Rossettis second poem under consideration is Remember. In contrast to Rossettis last poem A Birthday, Remember rather than celebrate the emotion of love it expresses it. Remember differs from all the other poems I have decided to analyse; it takes into consideration loss of love and the commemoration of it. This can be reflected to Rossettis own life when she lost a partner but remembers them dearly. In the opening lines the poet sets the scene buy going to a place where she cannot be followed by anyone especially her lover; Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far away into the silent land; In the second line here are parts of it which hint at the fact that the relationship may have ended as a consequence of the death of the male lover, thus the words Gone far away into the silent land with emphasis on the words into. The poet carries on to say: You tell me of our future that you planned: hinting at the fact that her lover made a major decision with out consulting her; therefore she says you planned putting her in the spotlight as a poor defenceless victim widowed by a decision he never chose to share with her; while she was dreaming of their future together which is shattered. On the other hand this poem could be the second part to Rossettis earlier poem A Birthday showing the reality of a relationship which can end as soon as it begins; like the changing of seasons, the summer comes and goes as if only a couple of days, opening up to a cold autumn breeze. The character in the poem (who is most probably the poet herself) is telling her lover not worry about her as id to rest in piece as she is near dearth herself; and she doesnt want him to remember her grieving; and to get on with his life. This last part is almost in reference to herself whom mourned her lovers absence or had got over him and moved on in her life. In contrast to the earlier poets ideas who all felt victimised with their loss; whereas Rossetti has come to live with her loss even though she may feel a little saddened by it. Both poems could be intertwined talking into consideration the theme they were written; A Birthday may be the beginning of a doubtful relationship and Remember a considerably time has passed since the relationship has ended. This can only be an assumption as we have no real insight on the poets private life style. Furthermore the moods in the poems differ considerably; in A Birthday the atmosphere is joyful and ecstatic whereas in Remember is sad and dull. In conclusion; all four poets express their unique ideas towards love at the time their poem is set. In First Love the young boy whom is known to be a younger John Clare; fells the incredible sensation of love for the first time in his life, in reference to the poems title First Love. Whereas in John Keats La Belle Dame Sans Merci the role character a knight who was left love struck by woman whom could be in relation to the lady of the lake as the bank of a lake and the final male poet Robert Browning whose poem My last duchess emphasises on the love for control, wealth, arts and pride. The final two poems both penned by Christina Rossetti A Birthday and Remember, each poem apposes the other, A Birthday resembling the joy of love and Remember signifying the loss of not just love but life as well.

Nominal Versus Real Quantities Real variables are those where the effects of prices and/or  inflation have been taken out. In contrast, nominal variables are those where the effects of inflation have not been controlled for.   As a result, nominal but not real variables are affected by changes in prices and inflation.   A few examples illustrate the difference: Nominal Interest Rates vs. Real Interest Rates Suppose we buy a 1 year bond for face value that pays 6% at the end of the year. We pay $100 at the beginning of the year and get $106 at the end of the year. Thus the bond pays an interest rate of 6%. This 6% is the nominal interest rate, as we have not accounted for inflation. Whenever people speak of the interest rate theyre talking about the nominal interest rate, unless they state otherwise. Now suppose the inflation rate is 3% for that year. We can buy a basket of goods today and it will cost $100, or we can buy that basket next year and it will cost $103. If we buy the bond with a 6% nominal interest rate for $100, sell it after a year and get $106, buy a basket of goods for $103, we will have $3 left over. So after factoring in inflation, our $100 bond will earn us $3 in income; a real interest rate of 3%. The relationship between the nominal interest rate, inflation, and the real interest rate is described by the Fisher Equation: Real Interest Rate Nominal Interest Rate - Inflation If inflation is positive, which it generally is, then the real interest rate is lower than the nominal interest rate. If we have deflation and the inflation rate is negative, then the real interest rate will be larger. Nominal GDP Growth vs. Real GDP Growth GDP or Gross Domestic Product is the value of all the goods and services produced in a country. The Nominal Gross Domestic Product measures the value of all the goods and services produced expressed in current prices. On the other hand, Real Gross Domestic Product  measures the value of all the goods and services produced expressed in the prices of some base year. An example: Suppose in the year 2000, the economy of a country produced $100 billion worth of goods and services based on year 2000 prices. Since were using 2000 as a basis year, the nominal and real GDP are the same. In the year 2001, the economy produced $110B worth of goods and services based on year 2001 prices. Those same goods and services are instead valued at $105B if year 2000 prices are used. Then: Year 2000 Nominal GDP $100B, Real GDP $100BYear 2001 Nominal GDP $110B, Real GDP $105BNominal GDP Growth Rate 10%Real GDP Growth Rate 5% Once again, if inflation is positive, then the Nominal GDP and Nominal GDP Growth Rate will be less than their nominal counterparts. The difference between Nominal GDP and Real GDP is used to measure inflation in a statistic called The GDP Deflator. Nominal Wages vs. Real Wages These work in the same way as the nominal interest rate. So if your nominal wage is $50,000 in 2002 and $55,000 in 2003, but the price level has risen by 12%, then your $55,000 in 2003 buys what $49,107 would have in 2002, so your real wage has gone done. You can calculate a real wage in terms of some base year by the following: Real Wage Nominal Wage / 1 % Increase in Prices Since Base Year Where a 34% increase in prices since the base year is expressed as 0.34. Other Real Variables Almost all other real variables can be calculated in the manner as Real Wages. The cranial neural crest develops into cartilage, bones, nerves, and connective tissues in the head. These cells also contribute to the formation of the skull, dentin of teeth, blood vessels, and a few skeletal muscles. This category is responsible for the craniofacial derivatives. Vagal and sacral neural crest cells give rise to parasympathetic neurons. The trunk neural crest forms the melanocytes or pigment cells, adrenal medulla, sympathetic neurons, and dorsal root ganglia. Cardiac neural crest cells form the connective tissues of the heart (Seeley, Stephens, and Tate 957). Roberto Mayor's Millennium Nucleus for Developmental Biology pointed out that the induction or stimulation of the neural crest is initiated by first inducing the neural plate and its border by bone morphogenic protein (BMP) signal inhibition. When BMP signaling is strongly inhibited, the neural plate is specified. In contrast, weak inhibition of BMP signaling leads to the specification of the neural plate border. An intermediate level of BMP activity required for the specification of the neural plate border can be created by interactions between the neural plate and epidermis. This intermediate level of BMP signaling has been tested to induce the neural crest of Xenopus (frog) and fish. Results show that the BMP signaling target, Msx1, is induced only by an intermediate level of BMP signal activity in Xenopus (Trainor and Nieto 5060). Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and Wnt can also induce the neural crest (Trainor and Nieto 5060). According to Mayor of UCL, these signal molecules to gether with retinoic acid originate from the posterior part of the embryo and are required to specify which part of the neural plate border will give rise to the neural crest cell population. The signals elicited by the inducer molecules may either act synergistically or require interference between the involved genetic pathways to promote neural crest formation. This population will in turn give rise to the derivatives, the type of which will depend on the length of migration and final location of the cells after the travel (Trainor and Nieto 5060). Furthermore, Wikipedia stated that cells which are to become the neural crest are induced by BMP, Wnt, and FGF to express the proteins Fox3D, RhoB, and Slug and to lose expression of E-cadherin. Slug is a repressor involved in the activation of factors that dissociate tight junctions. Divergent and Convergent Plate Margins Comparison â€Å"Compare and Contrast the Topographical Features at Divergent and Convergent Plate Margins.† Jenice Culzac According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) â€Å"a tectonic plate (also called lithospheric plate) is a massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere.†[1] There are two types of plates; Oceanic plates are younger crustal plates with a thickness of 5-9km of mainly basaltic composition and Continental plates are older crustal plates with thickness of 25-90Km of mainly granite composition. The area where two of these plates meet is referred to as a plate boundary. Plate tectonics is a recent theory developed around the late 1960’s from two pre-existing theories; Continental Drift by Alfred Wegener and Seafloor Spreading by Harry Hess. It suggests that the Earth is made up of eight large rigid and thick plates along with smaller ones as shown in Diagram 1 that move slowly and change size. Diagram 1 of a World map showing the tectonic plates and their direction of movement Plate tectonics has three types of plate margins or boundaries named accordingly by the type of movement; towards, away and parallel that occurs at these boundaries. They are Convergent, Divergent and Transform plate margins respectively. Due to these movements, associated landforms altering the world’s topography are created except for at Transform plate margins because the parallel movement of plates only causes the release of energy in the form of earthquakes. The aim of this essay is to compare and contrast the topographical features that occur at the Divergent and Convergent plate margins. It is imperative to know what topographical features both these plate margins produce in common at the forefront. Therefore as the discussion goes in depth as to how they are created by different processes, keeping in mind the vision of the end product which is of the same topography will enhance clarity and comprehension. The topographical features that both plate margins produce in common are volcanoes and mountain ranges. A volcano is a mountain like feature that has a vent in which lava, tephra and hot gases are expelled. A mountain range is an area of a series of mountains that are geologically related. Therefore, having established this each plate margin can be dealt with individually. Comparison Convergent plate margin also called Destructive plate margin occurs at a fault where two tectonic plates move towards each other. Due to the nature of the plates involved there can either be subduction in which the area is called a Subduction Zone or a collision in which it is referred to as Collision Zone. Density is the key factor that determines the end result of the plates involved. In the case where the plates moving towards each other are continental and oceanic such as the Indo- Austrlian and Pacific plates respectively. Oceanic plates although having a thickness of 5-9km as compared to continental’s thickness of 25-90km is denser. Hence when an impact occurs as illustrated in Diagram 2 the Oceanic plate subducts under the Continental plate into the mantle and is reabsorbed due to intense heat and pressure. The area at which this occurs is the Subduction Zone. Diagram 2 showing the convergence of an oceanic and a continental plate Lines of weakness referred to as faults can occur within the Continental plate during subduction. As the Oceanic plate subsides water is being taken along with it which produces steam. This build-up of steam adds to the pressure which then forces its way through the faults and allows for magma to erupt violently (referred to as lava when it reaches the Earth’s surface). The lava solidifies due to the cooler surrounding temperatures and forms volcanoes. A chain of these volcanoes is known as the Volcanic Arc. In the example of the plates given, this was how the Cascade Range in North America which is a part of the famously known Pacific Ring of Fire was formed. The frequency of eruptions and viscosity of lava will affect the height and gradient of these volcanoes. Therefore if the lava is less viscous it will run further distances away from the point of origin and create gentler gradients but if the lava is more viscous it will not flow as easily and solidifies at shorter dista nces allowing a faster accumulation. In addition to this scenario we can have the case in which the plates involved at a Convergent plate margin are both Oceanic. The same principle will apply and the denser of the Oceanic plates will subduct. The features produced will have the same general high relief however they are referred to as Island Arc. An example of such is the Japanese Islands where the Pacific and Philippine plates interact. The difference of names is understood if Diagram 2 and Diagram 3 are compared. The volcanoes formed in Diagram 3 are protruding from the Oceanic crust hence the Island (body of small land surrounded by water) term while in Diagram 2 the volcanoes formed protrudes from the continental plate hence the arc is just referred to as volcanic. Diagram 3 showing the convergence of two oceanic plates Volcanoes or volcanic activity are produced at Divergent plate margins regardless of the type of plates involved. When the plates move apart a gap is created which allows the magma to expel and the lava solidifies due to the same conditions as previously mentioned under Oceanic to Oceanic and Oceanic to Continental convergence. Mid ocean ridges are the dominant features formed however within these ridges are the under -water volcanoes. The ridge is indicated in Diagram 4 at the centre where it is labelled. Although the diagram gives the simplicity of an ocean ridge as two parallel lines, in actuality this ocean ridge is an extensive submarine mountain range. Diagram 4 showing the divergence of two oceanic plates The previous point introduces our second common feature, mountain ranges. At the Divergent plate margin the mid oceanic ridge would represent this submarine mountain range. Similarly at Convergent plate margins where Fold Mountains are formed this will represent the mountain ranges as well. These Fold Mountains are formed when two Continental plates travel towards each other. For example Eurasian and Indian plates which will have relatively the same densities. They will collide and fold by compressional forces forming these ranges. This is illustrated in Diagram 5 in which the Continental plate on the right is buckling having collided with the Continental plate on the left thus producing the peaks along the centre of the diagram which represents the mountain range. Diagram 5 showing the convergence of two continental plates With the example of the Continental plates given the Himalayas Mountain Range was formed with peaks of over 8,000 meters in height above sea level. Contrast On the contrary, there are differences between the topographical features of a Convergent and Divergent plate margin. These are Rift Valleys and Ocean Trenches created by divergence and convergence respectively. Rift valleys occur when faults lie at a 120 degrees angle within a Continental plate. When the plates move apart either one of the two scenarios occurs. Scenario one is the pull leaves a segment of the of the Continental plate in the centre which falls below referred to as graben as illustrated in Diagram 6 of the two opposite sides referred to as Horst in the same diagram creating a steep sided narrow valley. Diagram 6 showing the formation of a Rift Valley However, in scenario two instead of the centre segment falling, the lands on either side of the segment can rise due to a release in pressure. Overtime the said segment will reach to a point where it is below sea level causing the land mass to break away from the parent continent and creating a new ocean basin. A perfect illustration of this occurrence is the Great African Rift Valley. Diagram 7 indicates the zone of rifting which runs from Afar Triple Junction to South Mozambique and also offshore of the coast of Mozambique along the Kerimba and Lacerda grabens. Eventually the Somalian plate to the east will be completely separated from the Nubian plate on the west. Diagram 7 showing the location of the Great African Rift Valley Lastly is the ocean trenches formed at subduction zones of Convergent plate margins. According to Merriam Webster online dictionary an ocean trench is â€Å"a long, narrow, deep depression in the ocean bed, typically running parallel to a plate boundary and marking a subduction zone.† The steepness of the trench is reliant on the angle at which it is subducted. The movement and location of an ocean trench is illustrated in Diagrams 2 and 3. Diagram 8 gives a three dimensional view of Puerto Rico’s oceanic trench formed at the Caribbean and North America plate boundary. Learning is for everyone   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The institution called a university, or many times a community college, is an institution that should welcome anyone who is willing to make the effort to face the challenges that it brings. As William A. Henry III writes, “In the real world, though, mostly people go to college to make money';(The Museum of Clear Ideals, 146). I point out that there are a variety of different reasons for which people choose to enter into college. Some of these reasons do include the ability to make a higher income. But many also do so to learn a particular function or get a better understanding of a specific field, or to have an overall deeper knowledge of the world around us. Despite the reasoning behind it, the university experience is one that should be experienced by all.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The types of university courses are changing to reflect today’s society. It does vary from college to college, but quite often today a student can just about customize his or her own degree program. This allows someone to study a particular subject or learn more about the area of study that he or she prefers, rather than choosing from a limited amount of concentrations. This evolution within the college cirriculum is excellent especially for those who prefer a career that does not require a degree, but would like to study nonetheless. One should be free to learn what one chooses. Many colleges also allow people to take courses without necessarily being matriculated in a degree program. This is helpful for those taking courses such as foreign languages, basic business, or even arts and crafts-related courses. The idea of the community college is superb, allowing those who don’t have a lot of money to spend on such an investment the opportunity to study at a lower cost. These colleges are also less severe about whom they let in. For example, if someone who did not do well in high school and therefore did not foresee nor have the desire to go to college following graduation, he or she may still be accepted at a community college even years after high school is over. These institutions also tend to accept students who obtained only average grades and therefore did not qualify for more prestige universities. “For American society, the big lie underlying higher education is akin to…that everyone can be above average'; (The Museum of Clear Ideas, 147).

Juan De Sepulveda Belittes the Indians

Juan Sepulveda was a man who strongly felt he could define a person or group as â€Å"civilized or â€Å"barbarians.† Sepulveda’s purpose in his article/primary source analysis was mainly to inform the Spanish about the Native Americans â€Å"barbaric† society and how could either try and convert them to Christianity or destroy them. His audience is mainly the Spanish royalty, and also the Christian community. Sepulveda explains what the government and activity of the Natives are like, and degrades who they are so his audience could have a feeling whether they should be enslaved or converted.During Sepulveda’s article/primary source, he mentions how he saw the government with â€Å"†¦ [No] written laws, but barbarian institutions and customs †¦ what temperance or mercy can you expect from men who are committed to all types of intemperance and base frivolity, and eat human flesh? (lines 17-20).† So far Sepulveda has had nothing positive to say about the Natives, and feels that they are far from civilized. Personally, this doesn’t seem too barbarous because everyone has a custom to something Sepulveda writes in a way that persuades that the natives are basically cavemen who know no better, compared to the Spanish norms.Although he is not lying since the natives eat human flesh, which would be barbarous, but its only safe to say that the natives are far from modern day society and the roles. Another piece of evidence that Sepulveda shares is that the natives would â€Å"wage continual and ferocious war upon one another with such fierceness that they did not consider a victory worthwhile unless they sated their monstrous hunger with the flesh of their enemies. (lines 22-24).† This time he proves a point that they would be barbarous, stating that the only reason Natives fight other Natives would be for food. As true as this may be, Sepulveda fails to tell the whole story.Indians would not fight daily for th e flesh of other humans, or else they would be extinct. And hidden to Sepulveda mind, he didn’t think about the diversity of the Natives and their different groups, so it becomes more clear that his Goal is to make them seem like savages so the Spanish would feel more bias on enslaving them rather than them being converted first. On one positive note, it is clear Sepulveda wanted to say something positive about the Natives, saying â€Å"†¦ Although some of them show a certain ingenuity  for various works of artisanship, this is no proof of human cleverness. (lines 28-29).†If all Sepulveda has been saying was negative things, and have one positive note, then it must have really caught is attention that the Natives have a thing for artisanship. This may be a key point in Sepulveda’s persuasion to converting the Natives to slavery. To say they are crafty would show that they are of use to something. This sentence he writes can be easily summarized that they have a talent, but the Spaniards will always be the superior to the Natives, as said in line 33, â€Å" [New Spain] †¦ are considered the most civilized of all.† To break down my analysis of Sepulveda’s article would be easily described in lines 57 and 58 that the â€Å"[Natives] have stated quite clearly that they have been born into slavery and not to civic and liberal life.†All that Sepulveda wants is a group of slaves that would later be converted to Christianity for the use and the good of the Spanish goals. It was clear s day Sepulveda wanted to make the Natives look bad (and good enough) to make the Spanish ruler feel they would come good use to slavery. Broken down into a nutshell, if the Indians look useless enough, but they have â€Å"artisanship,† then what better place to be than slaves. And the goals of the Spaniards are to spread their Christianity, so why not make them Christians as well.

Nicomachean Ethics essays What is Aristotles Ethical Philosophy? Aristotle seemed to enjoy placing things into categories. He did this with nearly everything he could come up with. He describes humans as occupies space, reproduces, self-moving, and reasons. These qualities being what separates us from other things like animals, plants and inorganic material. On a much deeper level, Aristotle goes on to say that human beings consist of two things, a body, and a soul and they both depend on one another to survive. Aristotles view of the soul varied radically from what Platos definition was. Plato maintained that the soul and body were both separate entities that once the body died, the soul would return to the world of Forms. Aristotle, on the other hand, maintains that the soul is your bodys life force and that when your body dies, logically so does your soul. Another interesting concept that Aristotle proclaims is that all living things have souls. Every plant, every animal, and human being have souls. This is an extremely interesting concept. Th ere are many who have asked the question as to whether or not animals have emotions. It is possible, though Aristotle never clearly touches on the subject in our text, that one could derive an answer to this question based on Aristotles teachings. One could argue that the soul is the powerhouse of emotions, and thus, if all living things have them, then all living things have emotions. One would have to ask the question to themselves whether they believe in the existence of a soul before reviewing all of Aristotles views on the human being as one unit. Aristotle again breaks things down further for us; he enjoys doing this. Remember More Than Just Rabbits Understanding Of Mice andMen When people talk about influential pieces of American literature, there are a few titles you can just about guarantee will be thrown into the discussion, i.e.  To Kill a Mockingbird, Grapes of Wrath, Huckleberry Finn,  and oh yeah,  Of Mice and Men (kudos to Steinbeck for making my  off-the-cuff list twice). Chances are that even if you havent read any of these titles (though that is unlikely, knowing how popularly they are assigned as staples of high school reading lists), you have at the very least  heard of them.Of Mice and Men  is particularly critical to the American literary scene because it discusses a time deeply impactful to American history, the Great Depression. Like  in his other, equally popular novel,  The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck focuses  Of Mice and Men on the lives of poverty-ridden individuals trying to make their ways during this time period. This novel primarily follows George and Lennie, best friends who have secured grueling jobs on a ranch i n California. The two subsequently meet other men in similar positions, though some are older, some are meaner, and some are just the same- all struggling to attain the potentially nonexistent promise of the American Dream. We realize thats a rather rough-and-tumble, not-very-detailed summary of the story, so  heres  a more in-depth synopsis of the novel. Now, lets get started. Why is  Of Mice and Men  (still) so universally appealing? In this day and age, the more specific elements of Steinbecks work arent exactly  relatable. The Great Depression is over (knock on wood), people are no longer legally segregated,  and even the farming industry has evolved with the influence of technology. Regardless,  Of Mice and Men remains a huge part of the literary scene. Why? Steinbeck had an incredible ability to delve into the human psyche in a way that transcends specific experiences and speaks to universal human themes, i.e. friendship, loneliness, and the nature of free will. The unconditional love between characters George and Lennie makes readers consider their own relationships and how far they would go for the most important people in their lives. Its pretty deep and its very touching, even without all of the storys more specific inner workings. Speaking of those universally appealing themes Steinbeck  was an interesting man in many regards, one who took most aspects of his life very seriously. During his years at Stanford where he furthered his skills in writing, Steinbeck spent summers laboring in fields alongside migrant workers, making friends and learning the life stories of people with a much less fortunate upbringing than his own. As a result, the young author undoubtedly gleaned new insight on life and how it differs based on ones upbringing and lived experiences. From here, it can be said that Steinbeck developed his opinions on the matter of free will vs. pre-determination- a topic that becomes an overarching theme in  Of Mice and Men. Also recurring in the novel are themes of relationships,  most thoroughly depicted through the love between George and Lennie, but also through their involvement with other characters. Loneliness, too, plays a large part in the development and eventual climax of the tale, finally  leading to a pessimistic view of the American Dream and its nearly inevitable failures. While the aforementioned four themes are perhaps the most consistent and arguably the most dynamic of the story, there are certainly others that can be called into play, such as the presence of racism, poverty, and uncertainty. What goes into this type of writing? As you can probably imagine, a story this deceptively complex doesnt just  happen; there are a whole bunch of literary techniques and tools that go into crafting a story that is not only interesting, but will also stand the test of time. Of Mice and Men in particular is unusual in that it was written less like a novel and more like a play; Steinbeck himself said that within a year of its publication, he wanted to turn the book into a play. As a result, readers can see that there is no narrative voice, but rather all of the action and description comes about via dialogue between the two main characters: George and Lennie. Not only is this literary technique helpful in adaptation from print to stage, but also it aids the reader in feeling involved with the story- more like a member of a conversation than a disembodied viewer. Equally important is Steinbecks utilization of  parallelism. Parallelism can be defined as the  use of successive verbal constructions in poetry or prose that correspond in grammatical structure, sound, meter, meaning, etc. This literary device is particularly visible in Steinbecks descriptive language, more particularly still in his characterization of both Lennie and George: Both were dressed in denim trousers and in denim jackets with brass buttons,  both wore black, shapeless hats, and both carried tight blanket rolls slung over their shoulders. In other words, the repetitive utilization of both points  less to the authors  lack of a thesaurus and more to his intentional use of a literary tool meant to draw comparisons between these two friends, in spite of the differences between their characters. Can we get some specifics going? Of course! Specifics are always good for furthering ones understanding. Lets take a quick look at those themes of relationships and free will/pre-determination. You may be wondering how those two themes interact- after all, they admittedly seem pretty unrelated, but our pal Steinbeck finds a way to make them work together. As an author, Steinbeck was able to embody his views about peoples lack of free will in a way that wasnt altogether too controversial. He believed that ones life was determined by genetics and the social situation  one was  born into- in other words, he believed that if you were born rich and healthy, you would stay rich and healthy (or at least be able to afford medical care), and likewise those born poor and sick would remain so until their death. Steinbeck was able to convey  this idea in multiple ways through the friendship between George and Lennie. Both characters were born poor during a particularly rough economic period, but additionally, Lennie was born with mental handicaps that made his life more difficult. Lennie was unable to escape his circumstances of not only being poor, but also mentally challenged. For his part, George was stuck in poverty and therefore accepted a job along with Lennie. On multiple occasions, Steinbeck comments on how much easier Georges life would be without Lennie, but because of their brother-like friendship, George stays with Lennie until the end, thus adopting the restrictions of Lennies life  as his own. To make a very long story short: Steinbeck was a talented writer who was able to make the telling of a story as meaningful as the story itself. This handy-dandy readers guide was not written to take the place of reading the novel, but rather to supplement it. The questions addressed here help with ones understanding and interpretation of  Of Mice and Men, but in no way do they take to task everything that makes this novel one of the most outstanding  and powerful in American history.

This verifies the idea that globalisation is not the only reason as to why fundamentalists is growing, but attracting people in other ways. Lastly, Karen Armstrongs view also supports the view that it is not due to globalization. She argues there is nothing in Islamic religion which tends to lead towards fundamentalist beliefs. Many Islamic leaders and followers are in favour of westernisation and modernisation. However her argument differs to many as she states that the west has tried to impose modernisation too rapidly in these countries and as a result, this has lead to mass resentment f the west by many Islamic populations in the world, thus encouraging Islamic fundamentalism. In conclusion, although gloablisation does play a major role as to why fundamentalist groups are promptly growing, we cannot assume this is the only way. What Factors Affect the Rate of Evaporation of Water? Hubert Galan and Zafira Smith Introduction: Our testable question for this experiment is what factors affect the rate of evaporation of water. This testable question regards the different factors, such as the temperature surrounding the water being evaporation, the temperature of the water being evaporated, the temperature of the air surrounding the water being evaporated, the humidity of the air surrounding the water being evaporated. In order to test our question we will use a bowl of water and expose the bowl and the water inside of it, which would begin at a temperature of 30 degrees celsius, to many different conditions, such as heat lamps, and fans. In doing so we will exposing our bowl of water and water itself to the variety of different factors that we can assume are capable of affecting the rate of evaporation of our water, and by testing the each of these factors we will be able to determine which ones are actually influential to the rate of evaporation of the water being tested. Evaporation: Evaporation is when water changes form into gas. Evaporation is the main pathway that water moves from the liquid back into the water cycle as water vapor,(The Water Cycle: Evaporation). What this means is that gas or water vapors main way back into the water cycle is through evaporation, which shows the significance of it. More important information on evaporation is that energy is needed for evaporation to occur. The use of energy in evaporation is that energy breaks the bonds that hold water molecules together and which keeps the water in its liquid phase. Which is why water easily evaporates at a high temperature, because there is enough energy or heat needed to break those bonds. Evaporation is arguably the most important part of the water cycle. No evaporation would result in no rain, no rain equals no water for forest which provided the most essential gas for humans, oxygen. Overall without evaporation the effects would be destructive (Water and Global Change). What this shows is how important evaporation is in our world, and that without it we wont survive. For this reason my colleague and I are trying to answer the question what factors affect the rate of evaporation of water. Temperature: Water molecules are always moving, some molecules are hit by other molecules which cause them to gain speed. These molecules hitting each other cause the energy and the temperature to raise. Temperature is the average kinetic energy of the molecules. Slower moving molecules have a lower temperature(colder) while faster moving molecules have a higher temperature (hotter). The increasing temperature causes the water molecule bonds to break, which causes water molecules to turn into gas. The breaking of bonds of molecules is evaporation, it involves a change of state, from liquid to gas. The higher the temperature, the higher the rate of evaporation. When the temperature of water increases the water molecules gain more energy. When the water molecules temperature rises the water molecules start to move faster and thus evaporate faster. Basically the higher the temperature the higher the rate of evaporation (Factors Affecting the Rate of Evaporation). This is the most notable factor that affects rates of evaporation. The way we will test this is by having two bowls of water. One bowl will be exposed to normal conditions, while the other bowl will be exposed to a heat lamp. After twenty-four hours we will compare the mass of both bowls, and see if they change. After this we will conclude based on the data we received. Wind: Wind is the natural movement of air in any given direction. In order to test the effect of wind on the rate of evaporation of the bowl of water in our experiment we will use a fan and turn it onto the bowl of water being used. When evaporation occurs the water vapor from our bowl will be sitting just above the surface of the water in our bowl that has not yet been evaporated. When wind is added to the environment in which a body of water is in, the molecules of water vapor are rapidly moved from their resting position above the surface of the remaining water to the direction which the wind is facing. This rapid removal of molecules allows for rapid evaporation to occur because there is an increased amount space on the surface area of the remaining water which allow the water molecules to evaporate up. This also means that with an increased speed of wind there will be an increased rate of evaporation, as the molecules sitting on the surface of a bod y of water will be removed and replaced and a quicker rate. Humidity: Humidity is that amount of water vapor in the surrounding atmosphere of a body of water, in our case the cup being used in our experiment. In order to test the effect that humidity has on water vapor in our experiment, we will put a lid over the the bowl of water we will be using for testing. Evaporation in an airtight container increases the amount of water vapor that is present in the air above the water in said container. When the amount of water vapor in the air above our water increases, there is more humidity because humidity is the amount of water in the surrounding atmosphere in a body of water. When humidity is high in the air, it is harder for water to evaporate, because the air is filled with water vapor. The air can not absorb an unlimited amount of water molecules, meaning that there will be a slower rate of evaporation. If the space that is located above the water becomes filled with water vapor, then a condensations happens to cause a balance. (Factors Affecting the Ra te of Evaporation). Condensation which is the opposite process of evaporation, is when water vapor converts to liquid, meaning that the evaporation taking place in our experiment would be countered by the condensation already occurring to the vapor within our closed cup of water. Hypothesis: If wind affects the rate of evaporation then our water will evaporate faster because wind increases the evaporation rate of water through removing the water vapor particles that will be resting above the rest of our remaining water( that has not yet been evaporated), making room for new molecules to rest in the same place. If humidity affects the rate of evaporation then our water will evaporate slower because when humidity is high, it becomes more difficult for water vapor molecules to enter their atmosphere, therefore leaving no space for more molecules and slowing the rate of evaporation of water. If temperature affects the rate of evaporation then our water will evaporate faster because when waters temperature is increased the water molecules gain more energy, which causes the molecules to move faster, break bonds faster and thus evaporate faster.*we have three hypothesis because we are trying to accurately test our questions with multiple factors in order to answer our testable question Work Cited The Water Cycle: Evaporation. Good Country People by Flannery OConnor Characterization as Theme The Depth of Hulga?s Despair Characterization is the most prevalent component used for the development of themes in Flannery O?Connor?s satirical short story ?Good Country People.? O?Connor artistically cultivates character development throughout her story as a means of creating multi-level themes that culminate in allegory. Although the themes are independent of each other, the characters are not; the development of one character is dependent upon the development of another. Each character?s feelings and behavior are influenced by the behavior of the others. Joy/Hulga, as the story?s main character, is the singly most significant character to the themes of this story. She is characterized as brilliant and academically sophisticated, yet naà ¯ve to the feelings and motivations of others. Ironically, Hulga has a Ph.D. in philosophy, yet she has a very narrow view of her world and no insight into other people?s true character. This contrast in Hulga?s character is the topic of one of the story?s themes: academic knowledge is not to be confused with common sense. O?Connor continues to establish theme through her characterization of Hulga. She describes Hulga as being cynical about the world and the people she knows. The irony here is that she sees these people as being simple ?country people,? she doesn?t see them as they actually are, full of hidden feelings and motivations. She views herself as superior to her mother, Mrs. Hopewell, and her mother?s tenant, Mrs. Freeman. Her opinion of the other characters as less than herself, because of their tendency to see their world through the eyes of southern women, limits Hulga?s interaction with them. She... ...cares for her and thus encourages her into letting down her guard and trusting him. This becomes Hulga?s downfall and the most important theme of O?Connor?s story: people aren?t always what they appear or ?you can?t judge a book by its cover.? Her narcissism allows Manley to talk her into removing her leg. He grabs it and runs off with it, but not before letting her know that he has played her for the fool. O?Connor?s comprehensive character development leads her readers into complacently judging Hulga as superior to the other characters in her story. She takes this a step further in her development of Manley Pointer as an innocent. Through this development, O?Connor lulls her readers into stereotyping the characters into the personas she wants them to see. Hulga?s epiphany is thematic. The ultimate irony is that not only is Hulga duped by Manley, her readers are too.

Schools think that this uniform policy will help bring down crime rates, gangs, improve the schools over all academic achievement, and level out social discriminations among students. Although this theory may become true to someone who wants it to be true, other skeptics looking into this are finding that these positive influences from uniforms are merely misconceptions. Schools’ academic achievements are not influenced by the clothes that students have on their backs. Neither is the crime rate in that school. There were theories that gang members could sneak into schools by wearing that schools uniform and blending in with everyone. Some students are even saying that uniforms will not stop them from discriminating other kids since they still know who is rich and who is poor. Although our society thinks that forcing students to wear uniforms to school will cure all problems, they better think twice. School uniforms should not be allowed in public schools because they are not cost effective, they deprive students’ rights to express themselves, and lastly, they do not increase the status of the school who adopted the uniform policy. One of the reasons that school uniforms should not be allowed in schools because they are not cost effective. One reason why they are not cost effective is because some families cannot afford multiple uniforms, plus the clothes that students wear outside of school (Pakhare 1). Unlike the students who can afford three, four, or five uniforms, the poorer students’ one uniform will look worn out and used by mid-semester compared to everyone else (Stainburn 1). It will be easier to pick out the kids who cannot afford much. The social boundaries that uniforms were trying to get rid of will still occur with or without them (Cruz 47). The second reason behind why school uniforms are not cost effective is because schools think that having uniforms will cover up the fact that all students have a different amount of wealth, yet students still know who is rich and who is poor. Uniform pieces differ from one another. There are expensive pieces, and there are basic pieces (Chaika 1). The uniforms that students buy can set them apart on the social ladder at school; just as well as normal clothing can (1). Schools do not want kids â€Å"killing each other over designer jackets,† which is why they take in the uniform policy in the first place (1). Students who switch to different schools with uniforms frequently can be majorly impacted financially (1). Constantly buying new uniforms for those different schools can definitely drain that person’s money, thus not making school uniforms cost effective. In addition to school uniforms not being cost effective, they also deprive students of their right to freedom of expression. The first reason is that it violates the First Amendment. The First Amendment gives all citizens the right to freedom of expression and when schools make students all dress a certain way, then that takes away their right. It is unlawful to take away individuals’ freedoms since they have a right to those freedoms (â€Å"Current Events† 3). Any student who gets expelled or suspended for violating the dress code, say that it is blockading their right of free public education (Cook 1). The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said, â€Å"We think ordering school uniforms violates the First Amendment because it impacts on the freedom of expression† (3). Teachers also can be affected by this issue. They are the ones who have to put up with penalizing the students who break the dress code. A student in San Diego complained that â€Å"Teachers say they want us to be different, and then we all have to dress the same way† (3). Parents think that this policy is not a good idea, either. A parent in San Diego stated, â€Å"They have no right to make it mandatory. It’s against the rights of students and kids† (3). The second reason that school uniforms deprive students of their freedom of expression is that they make it harder for kids to find their identity in our modern society when they look exactly like everyone else (Cruz 46). As children grow up, they are supposed to make their own decisions while they learn from the mistakes they make, but the uniforms that the schools slap on kids is not a choice that they can decide on their own (47). The ACLU once stated, â€Å"Ban every individual expression and what you have left are not students, but soldiers† (47-48). This proves that each and every student’s right to freedom of expression is snatched away from them. The third and final reason why school uniforms should not be allowed in schools is that they do not improve the standards of a school. Some call it the ‘band-aid’ approach because instead of actually trying to solve the deeper issues in the school, they just mask all the problems by forcing students to wear uniforms (Cruz 43). One reason is that schools think that they will decrease the violence. They are mistaken because fights and other acts of misconduct will always happen in schools no matter what kind of clothes they wear (45). Students will always have grudges against other students and that will never change depending on the type of clothing they choose to wear. Uniforms cannot transform a bad student into a good one, they just dress them up to look like a good one (44). A student that created a problem before, will continue to create problems regardless of what they are wearing (Pakhare 1). Schools have socioeconomic groups that they want to break up in order to level out the social standards. One of those groups is gangs (2). Gangs are a growing problem in schools these days, but the clothes they wear in schools without uniform policies, can help others distinguish them from other students. If a school with gangs starts up the school uniform policy, it would be easier for gang members that are outside of the school, to sneak into that school to create some violence and mischief. Since everyone matches, you would not be able to distinguish a gang member from and actual student (Cruz 44). Another reason that school uniforms do not improve the standards of schools is that they do not improve school’s academic achievements. Studies have shown that uniforms had absolutely no correlation to test scores (Stainburn 1). Schools think that the sameness of everybody, because of the uniforms, will help students focus more on their studies, rather then what they look like. Although kids still find ways to discriminate one another, with or without uniforms, it still makes focusing on studies one hundred percent of the time difficult (1). Even in uniforms were in order, students will still stay distracted and will have to deal with daily discriminations (2). Schools have still found ways to improve academic achievements, which will incidentally improve their status, without the aid of uniforms (2). Because of the fact that school uniforms cost too much money, take away students’ rights, and do not increase a school’s reputation, they should not be required in schools. They do not have a useful purpose and there is no point of forcing students to wear them when they do not want to in the first place. It is only a matter of time before school districts realize how useless uniforms have become. Children that are forced to wear these uniforms do not like them, and neither to the parents that have to buy extra clothes that their kids only wear to school (Pakhare 1). It has been proven that there is little evidence to suggest a cause and effect relationship between the violence in school and the clothes that students wear (Cruz 45). Also, each and every student who is forced to wear a school uniform gets their right of freedom of expression taken away, which is consequently unconstitutional (â€Å"Current Events† 3). In conclusion to being against school uniforms being mandatory, they should be outlawed to all public schools since it has been proven that they are a tremendously horrible idea.
